"There's nothing better than sliding through snow and flying through the air." - Shane McConkey

If anyone had a front-row seat to the big-mountain, high-altitude antics of Shane McConkey, it was Scott Gaffney – his former roommate, good friend, and primary cinematographer. With Shane in front of the lens and Scott behind it, the pair created some of the most incredible action sports footage of the past two decades. The mutual experience between the two allowed them to film McConkey skiing incredibly challenging lines – often blind. Above, Gaffney reflects on their strategy of "throwing caution to the wind".

Shane McConkey was one of the pioneers of the big-mountain freeski movement, as well as a ski-BASE pioneer. Brash, daring and outspoken, with an undeniable sense of charm and approachability, McConkey was everybody's favourite skier. Celebrated among fans for his incredible skiing, gutsy maneouvres and sense of style, and revered among friends for his sense of humour and positive outlook on life, his death during a ski-BASE jump was met with sadness across the action sports world. The new film, McConkey, will be released in October.
