After a 3.6km swim, 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km run, Spanish triathlete Josef Ajram has completed the first day of his seven-day, seven-triathlon challenge.
The swim, which began at Roque de Bonanza on the island of El Hierro, was the easiest part, finishing in just an hour and ten minutes – the challenge came with the bike leg, which offered a climb of 2,900m.
Throughout the day, Josef's calorific intake was closely monitored by his team of doctors and nutritionists: 4,600 calories – delivered in bananas, turkey, tomatoes, chocolate, nuts, fruit, and peanut butter – and, of course, seven litres of water to stay hydrated. Although it was very hot, the team had an advantage – the wind was still, allowing for optimum performance on the bike, pleasant swimming, and no headwind on the run.
Tomorrow's challenge: the island of La Gomera, where Josef famously had to retire from last year's efforts. A successful attempt tomorrow will surely bode well – and offer a tremendous psychological boost to the athlete.
