Courtney Atkinson will race anyone, anywhere, anytime. So when an offer came up to contest the first ever Bondi Splash ’n’ Dash run-swim-run on November 22, the Olympic triathlete couldn’t say no. He is of course preparing for a big racing season over the summer and can’t think of a better way to ease back into the competitive arena.

Celebrity Bondi Lifeguard Andrew Reid has longed to combine summer festivities with summer activities and in finally doing so has created the inaugural Bondi Splash ’n’ Dash, a 3km run-swim-run.

It’s a 1km soft sand run the length of Bondi Beach, a 1km swim back to the south end and then a 1km dash to the finish line at North Bondi, all the while DJs blast music to create a festival-like atmosphere before the after party at North Bondi RSL.

It’s incentive enough for even the laziest of us to pull up the socks – almost.

“Reidy actually did a little piece for me in my Focus episode this year and this race concept is his brainchild, so I am stoked to be able to give back and be part of the inaugural event,” Courtney says.

I am pumped to race in the iconic Bondi Bay location. Forget the shoes. But it’s going to be a tough one with soft sand runs and fighting the surf in and out.

“I believe because of the location and the uniqueness of sand and surf compared to your garden variety triathlon or aquathon and the attraction of Sydney celebrities, this event will grow over the coming years.

“And it’s as good as an excuse as anything spend a weekend in Bondi.”
Not bad from a lad who just spent the past week in Noosa, linking with the Noosa Tri broadcast commentary team.

“Being on the mic and not the bike at Noosa Tri was a great experience,” Courtney says with a grin.

“But I won’t lie. I had some itchy feet seeing the racing, as I expected. For now, I’m happy to be back to day job of training and racing and looking forward to kicking off the new season with the Hamilton Island Triathlon before heading to Sydney.”
