This guy gets to hang out in paradise every day

"We can have adventures every single day. It all depends on how curious you are."

Spending your days exploring the paradisiacal landscapes of Latin America and getting paid for it might sound like the kind of job that’s too good to be true.

But for Milton Estrada, a tour guide based our of Mexico’s Playa Del Carmen, exploring the paradisiacal landscapes of Latin America and getting paid for it is literally his job. Oh, he gets to go caving and snorkelling on the job, too.

Milton! Where are you from, where do you live, and what do you do?
I'm originally from Mexico City. I now live in Playa del Carmen – well, that’s where I pay my rent, anyway - I'm an adventure tour guide working as a freelancer all over Latin America. I design and manage Urban Adventures tours in Mexico City, Merida, Yucatan, La Paz (Bolivia) and, soon, Playa del Carmen too.

What does your job entail on a daily basis?
Basically there's no routine for me since I have to guide day tours, lead long trips, design new tours and scout out new destinations.

What kind of adventures do you take your travellers on?
I've done all kind of tours depending on the destination I’m in at the time. Talking specifically of Urban Adventures, I take people to archaeological sites, amazing sinkholes, caves, scuba diving with sharks and many more great experiences I know are close by.

What's your favourite thing about your job, or the best thing that's ever happened whilst you've been working?
My favourite thing about my job is when, at the end of the day, people tell me how amazing their day was. They always invite me to their places and when I have had the opportunity to visit them, they always show me their favourite things from their home.

I have a lot of good memories, but one of the best was when I had to help a guy plan a marriage proposal. He told me in the morning when I picked them up. I planned the whole thing. I lef them alone in favourite part of the cave and gave this guy a torch and good vibes for the proposal. That’s something I'm always gonna remember and will make me smile any time!

You’re big into your underwater caving, right?
Yeah! I explore the cenotes caves in the Yucatan peninsula with friends. We love finding new cave systems – they’re amazing underground worlds. My favourite cave to dive is called Angelita – it’s like diving into a surrealist underwater painting.

What, in your mind, is the definition of adventure? Is it possible to have adventures in everyday life?
My definition of adventure is to try anything you haven't done before, especially if it represents some new challenge. And yes, we can have adventures every single day. It all depends on how curious you are

Do you have any advice for those who might want to get into more adventurous jobs themselves?
Build your own career out of the things you feel passionate about and don’t be afraid to take risks on things that you've never tried before.
