With Red Bull Can You Make It? wrapped up for another year, we thought it’d be wise to spin a yarn with the winning team, University of Wollongong’s ‘The Big Jobs’, to get the goss on their winning strategy.
RBCYMI –the event that pits competitors the task of navigating their way around Australia using only Red Bull cans as currency – is no joke (although, it is super fun).
Cambo, Pat and Sam – the three students that made up ‘The Big Jobs’ – travelled some 4358km from Cairns, down to Melbourne and back up to Sydney. Their entire trip was fuelled by trading 288 Red Bull cans along the way. And in the end, they came out with the most points and won the whole competition. Here’s how they did it.
What made your team want to sign up for Red Bull Can You Make It Australia?
We were introduced to the competition by a friend. It really captured our attention and seemed like an opportunity to get involved in an awesome adventure with a couple of good mates!
What do you think your best trade was?
We were approaching Goulburn en route to Melbourne when we met a guy who picked us up. He basically took a shining to us, took us to dinner, took us around the town and even got us on the train down to Melbourne -all for just 24 cans of Red Bull.
What was the secret to winning?
Not taking anything too seriously!
What were you most excited about when you were at the ‘Red Bull Can You Make It? Australia’ start line?
We had a pretty great plan in mind so executing that straight off the start line was probably what was dominating our mindset. It all involved obtaining some of the ‘Adventure Points’ [points accrued for completing a list of challenges] within the first few minutes of the event. One of these challenges was called ‘The Budgie Smuggler’, which meant we had to get in our swimmers and get in the water. So w stripped off and ran straight down into Bondi Beach - it allowed us to get a strong start!
What was the biggest lesson you learned during the trip?
People skills! Having the confidence to walk up to anyone regardless of where you were or who they were. Of course, that involved charming people and then asking if they could help. At the end of the day we learned that there are heaps of good people out there, you’ve just got to find them!
Any advice for future entrants to Red Bull Can You Make It?
Get organised! Try and lock down your transport from Brisbane to Cairns as soon as possible! You don’t want to get stuck. Otherwise don’t plan anything. The best thing about this adventure is that everything is so unexpected. You never know what is going to happen and that’s what makes it so exciting.
