The Canadian speed specialist Erik Guay has surprised the ski world by clinching gold in the 2017 FIS World Ski Championship Super-G in St Moritz, Switzerland.
Just 10 days before, Guay narrowly escaped major injury in a spectacular crash in a World Cup Downhill race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Luckily he came away with only minor bumps and bruises and was able to race in St Moritz.
It’s incredible. It’s the whole history with all the injuries – coming back today from it and from a big crash last week

Guay triumphed ahead of Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud and fellow Canadian Manuel Osborne-Paradis, who trailed the winner by 0.45s and 0.51s respectively.
"It’s incredible. It’s the whole history with all the injuries – coming back today from it and from a big crash last week," said Guay. "It’s incredible just forgetting about everything and being able to have a good, fun race. I'm having a hard time expressing it, but I'm as happy as I can be."

"It’s also incredible to be on the podium with two of my good friends, Kjetil Jansrud and Manny Osborne-Paradis."
Guay's struggled with repeated injuries in recent years, yet the 2011 Downhill World Champion felt comfortable on the challenging track today.
“I remember the course here from 2003 and I remember the snow,” said the veteran, who dominated a race that saw many of the favourites fail under mostly overcast skies and a difficult course set.
