Those magnificent men and women in their flying machines took (briefly) to the skies as the Red Bull Flugtag hit Tampa, Florida. Check out all the action in pictures...
The sun was shining, the wind was blowing and 125,000 Floridians were on hand to cheer the brave souls who took part at the second Red Bull Flugtag Tampa Bay. The event, which is judged on distance, creativity and showmanship, saw a host of wacky crews vying to take home the coveted Red Bull Flugtag trophy, but it was returning the 2008 champions who surfaced with the title.
Despite having changed their name from Tampa Bay Watch in ’08 to Willy Wonka’s Amazing Flying Flugtag Adventure in '11, these guys continued their winning ways to take the title yet again. “We weren’t sure we could fly and the pressure as reigning champions was incredible,” said team pilot Keith Humphrey who was joined on the podium by his trusty Oompa Loompa crew, Kevin Riley, Dave West and Christopher Elmore. “We went good distance despite the winds and are just so excited to take the title again.”
Completing the podium were second-placed Team BigStuff - who went Back To The Future with their flying DeLorean - and third-placed U.S.A Team - who weren't pitying any fools in their B.A. Baracus-influenced van.
The teams had to blow away the panel of celebrity judges, including Tampa Bay Rays player Evan Longoria, PGA champ Lexi Thompson, former NFL player Ryan Nece and motocross rider Tarah Gieger. “It was fun, it was exciting, we saw creativity and craziness with teams just going out on a limb enjoying life and having a great time,” said Ryan Nece. “This is what Red Bull Flugtag is all about and I was honored to be a part of it.”
