To help ring in the new year as 2009 drew to a close, Travis Pastrana jumped a Subaru Impreza STi rally car 269 feet over the water at Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, California, breaking the world record by nearly 100 feet.
"What's great is that this is a street-legal car with a rollcage and some safety adjustments," Travis said about the car two years ago. "The suspension is pretty much unchanged from the rally car set-up."
The jump -- part of the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. series -- was witnessed by around 75,000 fans at Rainbow Harbor, in addition to millions of viewers on ESPN. In case you missed it -- or just want to get pumped -- here are the highlights of the record-breaking jump and how Travis did it. Finally, the jump, as it aired live on ESPN...
“I was really nervous all day long, but when I got in the car I felt really calm,” said Pastrana afterward. “It was definitely a lot more fun than any of my practice runs, and when I landed, man did that retaining wall come up fast! I’m just happy the car and I didn’t end up in the drink. What a way to head into 2010!”
