Sebastian Vettel insists his fight for the Formula One drivers’ championship is far from over despite scoring just a single point at Monza while Brawn GP reasserted their claim to both titles with a one-two finish led by Rubens Barrichello.
Despite racing a similar one-stop strategy to the Brawns, Vettel, starting from ninth, was hampered early in the race by lack of grip and was passed by the lighter KERS equipped cars of Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.
But even though he was dropped down the race order, Vettel battled back to his starting position before being gifted a point when third-placed Lewis Hamilton crashed out on the final lap of the Italian Grand Prix while chasing down Button.
“I think we had a good start and a good first lap, but then I was struggling to stay with the cars in front,” Vettel admitted. “The biggest issue today was the first five to 10 laps when I was struggling with low grip, I was sliding a lot and lost a lot of time.
“Overall, we didn’t have the speed and perhaps this wasn’t the best track for our car,” he added. “For the next race we will put more downforce on again and maybe we’ll be better, we will see. The championship isn’t over – our target is to do our best, we’re here to win races and the championship, so we have to focus on that, all the rest is out of our hands.”
