JANUARY
Lady Gaga (pictured) launches her assault on the UK with her first number one Just Dance, also finally making the top spot in the US after a six-month crawl up the Billboard charts... Bruce Springsteen hits the top of the charts with his album Working On A Dream... MIA is nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar for Paper Planes... New albums released by Animal Collective, Franz Ferdinand and White Lies... RIP John Martyn, Scott Asheton (The Stooges).

FEBRUARY
Lily Allen returns with her second album It’s Not Me It’s You and also spends the month at the top of the singles chart with The Fear... Santogold becomes Santigold... Coldplay, Adele, Daft Punk, Justice and Robert Plant are all big winners at the 51st Grammys... Meanwhile Rihanna has to pull out due to being assaulted by her boyfriend Chris Brown... Meanwhile, Duffy, Kings Of Leon and Pet Shop Boys gain gongs at The Brits... New albums by U2 and Morrissey... RIP Lux Interior (The Cramps).

MARCH
Daft Punk announced as soundtrack-writers for Tron Legacy, the long-awaited sequel to Tron... The Prodigy return to the top with Invaders Must Die album... Flaming Lips have their song Do You Realize?? adopted as Oklahoma’s Official Rock Song... New albums by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MSTRKRFT, Royksopp, The Decemberists.

APRIL
The Specials reform for a series of sold-out shows without founding member Jerry Dammers... Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan rushed to hospital mid-tour with stomach pains, found to be a tumour in his bladder... The Red Bull Bus starts to make appearances around various European festivals... New album by Doves.

MAY
T.I. goes to prison for a year... Blink 182 announce comeback... John Squire from The Stone Roses dismisses talk of a reunion, and instead opens an art exhibition... Toddla T releases his debut Skanky Skanky... Red Bull Music Academy announces its next round of events for London in February 2010... New albums by The Horrors, Gallows, New York Dolls, Green Day, Passion Pit, Manic Street Preachers, Grizzly Bear.

JUNE
Michael Jackson dies on the eve of a 50-night residency at London’s O2 Arena... Blur play a series of sold-out reunion gigs, including a headline slot at Glastonbury...
