Fresh from competing in the French Alps at the Red Bull Linecatcher backcountry extravaganza, German ski champ Bene Mayr is about to prove why he’s the next big thing with his amazing versatility on the snow as he gets set for Winter X Games.
Competing in the Big Air contest against legends such as Bobby Brown and fellow young talent Russ Henshaw, Bene plans to drop some serious moves in Aspen… we grabbed 60 seconds with Bene to get his thoughts on the challenge ahead.
Was the recent backcountry competition useful in preparing you for Big Air at the X Games?
“It’s not really practice for this as they are completely different. What I will be doing at X Games isn’t like that at all and it is a challenge to manage both – I’ll see how it goes! It’ll be a bit of an experiment. X Games is all about having amazing tricks and being a good jumper to win so it is very different. Ski-wise it’s not too much about that, you just ski straight in, do your jump and then land and ski straight out. For Linecatcher you have to be a good skier and a good jumper so it’s harder. Of course the tricks you do at Linecatcher wouldn’t make you win at X Games.”
You’ve just filmed a show for the Disney Channel with future stars of skiing. Tell us about that?
“There were four professional skiers and snowboarders and nine kids. We coached them for one week and one of them will get the chance to do a run in the halfpipe at X Games. They are all aged between12-14 and it’s been fun. They are all really good and I can definitely see some stars of the future plus they are all really good kids.”
