PRINCE WADADA Prince Wadada

The Pirate Popular Soundclash has commandeered the Príncipe Perfeito, moored on Lisbon’s Tagus, for an all-night Red Bull Music Academy Radio broadcast starting at 6pm tonight and finishing at 3am. But with more than 20 acts mooring up to take part, who will rule the airwaves?

Last year's 10-hour marathon broadcast from the Palacio de Santa Catarina took one of Lisbon's best-loved street parties in a whole new direction. This year they intend to sail right over the edge...

With Ginga Beat crew Violet, DJ Mpula and Rui Miguel Abreu are at the helm, but what about the other acts? Let’s batten down the hatches and find out a little bit more about some of the acts taking part.

OCTA PUSH:
Ahoy there! Introduce yourself to redbull.com
We're Octa Push, two brothers from a place in Portugal called Crunkin'stone. We like to waste part of our lives drawing rectangles and moving little audio clips on Cubase. Some of the results are out there thanks to labels like Iberian, Enchufada, Steakhouse, Soul Jazz, Fabric and others.

What can we expect from your slot on the radio?
Fun and silliness.

Are there any key new tunes you’re particularly excited about?
Great music around at the moment. If we had to name one, the last Deadboy release in particular is ace. New Baobinga / Poirier on Steak House Rec is brilliant as well.

If you were to stow away on a pirate ship with only one disc, what would you take?
A disc full of mp3s and pirated (arrr!) software.... Ha! Hah!.

Any key new tunes you’re particularly excited about?

If you were to stow away on a pirate ship with only one disc, what would you take?

TERRAKOTA:
Ahoy there! Introduce yourself to redbull.com
I am Romi Anauel and I’m a singer with Terrakota. I was born in Angola and came to Portugal when I was two years old. Terrakota has given me the chance to travel around the world, which is incredibly enriching. I like roots music from around the globe. Next to singing, I like to dance, to be in contact with nature and work my spirituality. I really believe in the power of music!

What can we expect from your slot on the radio?
As it will only be Junior and me, I hope we’ll be able to transmit what we are normally able to transmit when the full band is playing. It’s going to be difficult to reach the energy level. It’s will be the first time we play as a soundsystem! I hope it will be a good experience! We are going to sing some new songs from our new album that is coming out in October. I hope you will like them.

Are there any key new tunes you’re particularly excited about?
We are bringing out our new single ‘World Massala’ in June. It’s recorded in India with Mahesh and Rajasthan Roots, musicians we met in the Himalayas when we performed at the Ladakh Confluence last year in August. What a great experience that was! But the new songs I’m most excited about are the two ballads I recorded with Paulo Flores. One of them is about going back to my roots in Angola. And we have a new gnawa I really like! And our new Afrobeat ‘Slow Food’ is really groovin’! It has conscious lyrics about the scrap food we eat, as Afrobeat should be. And to party, I like ‘Ilegal’.

If you were to stow away on a pirate ship with only one disc, what would you take?
Ufff… Difficult question as I like so many musical styles and musicians. It’s a shame to all those great musicians to take only one disc with me. But if I have to, I’ll go with the latest cd of the accordionist from La Réunion, René Lacaille. Great fusion and simple vibrations. I listen a lot to it these days. Simply divine!

M-PEX:
Ahoy there! Introduce yourself to redbull.com

Hello! My name is Marco Miranda (aka 'M-PeX'), i was born in Lisbon in 1979 and I'm a musician and producer. 'M-PeX' is a musical project that allies the Portuguese Guitar to electronic music, and dares to explore musical landscapes never visited before. I began by playing the guitar to accompany Fado with my grandfather Luís Pinheiro, who plays the Portuguese Guitar in Fado houses, restaurants and private functions. My grandfather gave me a Portuguese Guitar as a birthday present and began to teach me some of his craft and methods. In parallel, as result of an ongoing interest in producing electronic music, in 1999 the project M-PeX was born, which allows the inclusion of the Portuguese Guitar, attempting to create unusual atmospheres in the national music scene, mixing sound aesthetics as different as Fado, Dub, Dubstep and Drum'n'Bass. A bold experiment that sets a test for ears that dares to break down clichés and which proves that traditional music can also be modern, or vice-versa.

What can we expect from your slot on the radio?
Imagine the crystalline sound of a Portuguese Guitar. Imagine a laptop knocking out electronic rhythms. My slot on the radio will be just that, electronic music mixed with live Portuguese Guitar. Or maybe it will be Portuguese Guitar with electronics. Either way, the project mingles apparently irreconcilable music styles and i think that the result is neither Fado nor electronic music, nor even the sum of the two, it's something more: something indefinable that is born of the marriage of tradition and innovation.

Are there any key new tunes you’re particularly excited about?
I am particularly excited about my new, unreleased and original tracks for my next album... that will be released later this year.

If you were to stow away on a pirate ship with only one disc, what would you take?

What can we expect from your slot on the radio?
