ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti | Adriano de Souza rules the waves

The big news from the first day of action in Tahiti was the near perfect score posted by Red Bull-backed surfer Adriano de Souza. The Brazilian came through his first round heat with a score of 19.43 out of 20 at the event which is being broadcast live on

The fifth stop of the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour brought the very best out of Adriano as he threaded two impressive barrels on his backhand. Getting the Billabong Pro Tahiti started in such style brought a big smile to the Brazilian’s face.

“I’m so happy right now. Last year we had some really big waves and even though today we just had four footers out there it was still good fun. I was just concentrating on having fun and catching good barrels. It seems the judges liked what they saw so I’m happy about that.”

More faultless surfing in Tahiti will see Adriano rise from his current position of fourth in the ASP World Championship Tour rankings.

“This year is going well for me. Every year I focus on what I need to improve on and go out and work on it. I feel more confident at every spot, I feel strong and have good boards right now.”

While things got off to the best possible start for Adriano in Tahiti there was no such luck for Mick Fanning. The two-time ASP WCT winner was beaten in his first round heat by Taylor Knox.

The day did end on a high note of Mick however when he won his second round heat against local surfer Alain Riou. The Aussie’s score of 17.60 put him right back in the mix at the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

“While I maybe ahead in the overall rankings I still think we’re all pretty close at the top. In past years I’ve made pretty strong runs in the back half of the season and now I’m currently in the lead at the midway point.

Mick prefers to keep his thoughts on his surfboard rather than on the leaderboard.

“It’s so early in the season that you do yourself a favour by not thinking about the ratings. We’re all really close at the top end of the ratings and there’s still a lot of opportunity to rise and fall before the year’s out.”

The forecast for tomorrow’s surf is predicting six-foot waves to wash in on Teahupoo. You can watch live action from all 11 days of the ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti at
