ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti | The story of the surf so far

A rest day at the ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti gives us the perfect chance to look back at the biggest barrels of the competition so far.

Making waves in the early stages of this fifth stop of the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour was Adriano de Souza. The Red Bull-backed Brazilian clocked up a near perfect score of 19.43 in his first round heat as he mastered the Teahupoo wave.

Adriano is a serious contender to win his first ever ASP WCT title this year and a few more successful barrels will secure him a great result in Tahiti.

Among the surfers who were not as lucky as Adriano in the first heat was Mick Fanning, the Aussie was forced into a Round 2 battle against Alain Riou. Mick eventually did enough against his local opponent to take a place alongside Adriano de Souza in Round 3.

Another Brazilian impressing in the heats of the ASP Billabong Pro Tahiti has been Miguel Pupo. The surfer from Sao Paulo recorded a score of 18.97 out of a possible 20 points in his second round contest against Yadin Nicol.

After returning to the shore Miguel said he had just as much fun out there as everyone watching the action live at

“The waves were really fun during our heat and they kept coming none stop. We were happy to have lots of waves in our heat. This is my first time competing at Teahupoo so I’m just trying to get as many waves as I can and build my experience.”

The forecast is predicting the action will get back underway on Sunday with ASP WCT rankings leader Mick Fanning first in the Pacific Ocean for a third round heat against Fredrick Patacchia.
