Sonar is just that bit different from your average summer festival. Allow us to break it down for you…

Spain
– or Catalonia if you prefer – welcomes Sonar each year, and 2010 marks the festival’s 17th consecutive year. Barcelona’s urban landscape replaces the usual fields and mud associated with summer festivals. Last year, more than 75,000 revellers packed into the city to enjoy the event.

Orbital,
famed over almost two decades for their sample-heavy, huge dance sound, and for massive hits like Belfast and Chime, headlined the festival last year. This edition sees big names The Chemical Brothers, Air and LCD Soundsystem topping the bill. French DJ Laurent Garnier will also be in attendance, just as he was at the very first Sonar back in 1994.

Night-time
is just as big a deal as daylight activity at Sonar. After daytime sets at the SonarHall, SonarVillage, SonarComplex and SonarDome have ended, the three Sonar By Night stages in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, SonarClub, SonarLab and SonarPub, host various acts from the world of electro, with both up-to-the-minute DJs and old favourites present.

Advanced
artforms and media are a big part of what sets Sonar apart from more conventional festivals. There are lightshows, films and documentaries using up-to-the-minute multimedia to produce a completely different festivalgoing experience. Exhibitions like that of a series of ‘intelligent’ robots at SonarMàtica complement the activities on the main stage.

Red Bull Music Academy
have had a long association with Sonar, and will be curating a number of acts at the SonarDome again this year, including GoldieLocks, Teri Gender Bender and Moodymann.
