When Adam Malysz retired from ski jumping in March 2011, at the end of last season, the Pole wasted no time in finding a new direction, and one which he didn’t consider a “brutal change”.
Malysz enjoyed a ski jumping career spanning 16 seasons, with 39 wins and four World Cup titles, and he still enjoys a huge following in his home country and elsewhere.
Originally slated to drive a Porsche Cayenne in the Dakar 2012, Malysz and co-driver Rafal Marton, who began their training as far back as April, will now share a Mitsubishi Pajero car for Malysz’s Dakar Rally debut.
Fast Fact: Polish fans were horrified when Adam suffered a crash at Zakopane last season and had to be airlifted to hospital – but then he recovered more quickly than anticipated and managed to return to Zakopane to achieve one last victory, a fitting swansong at the end of his stellar career – at least, this chapter of it…
Best quote: “I hope in 10 years’ time I'll still be engaged in sports – maybe not ski jumping any more but something that will give me a lot of pleasure and health. I hope I won't have changed and I'll still be myself – cheerful, truly optimistic and a happy person…” Adam Malysz
