The Red Bull Art of Motion returns to Vienna, Austria on May 7. While the competitors limber up, we run through some need-to-know facts...
Free running...
Is a form of urban acrobatics, in which participants – known as free runners – perform tricks using the obstacles in the environment around them. Free running incorporates elements of parkour, but adds aesthetic moves from tricking and gymnastics, such as flips and spins, that aren’t seen in parkour.
25...
Of the world’s best professional free runners will compete in Vienna as part of Red Bull Art of Motion. After two rounds of qualifying, the top eight will battle it out in front of 2,500 fans for the overall title.
100...
The maximum number of points the competitors can score on each run. The free runners are judged on five categories; technique, execution, fluidity, creativity and style and can be awarded a maximum 20 points for each one. Delian Dimitrov won the Art of Motion event in Sweden last year with a perfect score of 100 points.
Moves...
Although there are a number of well-known and named moves, such as flips, twists, walltricks and corkscrews, free running encourages creativity to produce any aesthetically pleasing movement.
Injuries...
Ryan Doyle broke his leg when attempting a double cork at the first Art of Motion in 2007. Trying to land the move from a height onto a thick crash mat, he missed the mat with one leg and landed on concrete. Last year, Ryan Houchin narrowly escaped serious injury when attempting a wallflip. Despite falling 25 feet, he managed to slow himself with his feet against the wall before grabbing hold of a power cable.
Sickest
Trick...
Awarded by the judges for the best trick performed on the day. Delian Dimitrov took the Sickest Trick award in 2009 with a double sideflip, despite injuring himself in the process and being forced to end his run early. The award highlights the difference between free running and parkour, where such moves would be seen as too inefficient.
