As he prepares to defend his world crown, Gee Atherton said he’s disappointed he won’t be able to compete at the sport when the Olympics come to London.
The IOC had been considering the discipline for inclusion the 2012 Games, but have now ruled it out. “Cross-country mountain-biking is in the Olympics, but not downhill,” said Gee. “There are no plans for 2012, but I hope they introduce it soon as it is so good to watch. I think it beats all other disciplines in cycling.”
Gee is currently in Australia to defend his title at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Canberra, although he spent last weekend acclimatising in Sydney and watching the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters in Cronulla.
He arrives at Stromlo Forest Park hungry for success. “I’ve been very consistent this season with lots of podium places, but no wins,” said Atherton. And the Briton also expects competition to be tougher this year, not least with a resurgent Sam Hill racing on home soil. “Everyone has stepped up a level and whereas last year differences were measured in seconds, now it’s hundredths of seconds. There are five or six who can win this week in Canberra, including me.”
As well as the two former world champions, expect to see the UK’s Steve Peat, Finland’s Matti Lehikoinen and South Africa’s Greg Minaar in the final reckoning.
