Some of the world's best breakdancers descend on Italy for the BC One Club Tour. There are stops in Rome, Venice, Naples and Florence before the final which takes place at 'The Week', a Hip-Hop festival in Cesenatico in July. Here are some cold, hard facts about B-Boys...
1...
It's the first time that the stars of the world's most important one-on-one B-Boy battle exhibit their art to an Italian audience. The tour consists of a series of workshops and club parties. At the workshops you can learn the basics of B-Boying directly from the pros.
50...
That's the number of B-Boys and B-Girls who will be participating in this year's BC One. 2,000 spectators are expected to attend the event in Italy.
1970s...
Breakdancing began in the Bronx in the 1970s as a way for rival gangs to settle differences and set the location for upcoming rumbles. The dance-off, which pitted the gang leaders against each other, mirrored the upcoming confrontation and was used to determine whose turf would play host to the rumble. The winner was the one who could do something the other guy couldn't match.
4...
There are four kinds of moves that can be performed in different routines by breakdancers. These moves are the freezes, power moves, down rock and the top rock.
Power moves...
Arguably the hardest of the four kinds of moves since they require great upper-body strength. Some examples of popular power moves are the flares, swipes and windmills. Power moves are often combinations taken from gymnastics.
Air Flare...
One of the hardest power moves to execute. Starting from a 1990 or windmill or halo or headspin position, the B-Boy goes into a handstand with his body diagonal to the ground and legs spread out into a V-shape. The legs are swung, like windmills, in a circular motion. Using the momentum, the B-Boy switches from arm to arm as the body rotates in the air. The most difficult part of this move is the switching of the arms (while in the air and while the back of the B-Boy is facing the ground).
Hollowback...
A freeze move that involves leaning backwards from a handstand position in an extreme back arch. In a true hollowback, the legs are together. It's similar to the Bridge position except the feet don't touch the ground.
