Ahead of the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix, we caught up with two of the country’s sporting celebrities, Kinga Horvath and Gabor Kucsera, to find out about their favourite sporting spots in Budapest.
Kinga Horvath, Wakeboarder
“Budapest is a fantastic city – it’s very chilled. I’m a wakeboarder, so my favourite place to relax is anywhere with water. I train at Lake Omszk, just north of the city.
I live just outside of the town on the south side of Buda, so my drive to the lake is along the Danube. It’s really beautiful; many people jog along there.
My other favourite place in Hungary is Lake Balaton. It’s magical! I was born nearby – it’s the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe.
“I swim there a lot and of course I ride there too. There are three cables around the lake and a bicycle road, which is great – it’s one of the best places to cycle. I definitely recommend a visit.”
Gabor Kucsera, Sprint Canoer
“I like to go running to Margaret Island between 7 and 8am. It’s in the Danube in central Budapest. It’s very peaceful and nice there in the morning and the city wakes just as I’m completing the running session.
The pools and shops are about to open and some night-clubbers are still walking around at that time. There is a water park on the island and a sports pool – I started swimming there at the age of three.
There’s also a zoo – when I was younger and used to go to the island for kayak training, I would regularly stop to feed the animals.”
