Picture the balcony scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet transplanted from Verona to a small town on the Austrian/German border, with 38 Romeos competing for the affections of one Juliet, and you have the inaugural Red Bull Fensterlkönig.

Roughly translated fensterln means ‘climbing in through his sweetheart’s bedroom window’ and it’s a traditional pursuit in Bavaria. To find the king of fensterln, the organisers built an assault course in the small town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Against the clock, 38 red-blooded suitors had to cross the wood in front of the cabin, climb a slippery ladder, drive a nail into a trunk before they could plant a kiss on the cheek of Germany’s Miss Dirndl beauty queen, Veronika Wilbert.

Cheered on by a crowd of 600, the eventual winner was 19-year-old Florian Halbartschlager from Stuttgart, Germany. “Fensterln should be an Olympic sport. It’s so much fun!” he said. “The track was quite difficult, especially because of the rain. But I won and I am very happy about that."

His prize? A date with Miss Wilbert? Nope, a free concert by 80s popsters Spider Murphy Gang.
