Chris Sullivan continues to pick up snippets of gossip and movie news from La Croisette. Here's the latest from our man in Cannes...

Spoiled oaf, Peter Fonda, the star of Easy Rider, made the dubious suggestion that he was arming his grand kids to shoot President Barack Obama. “I’m training my grandchildren to use long-range rifles,” said the actor, 71. “For what purpose? Well, I’m not going to say the words 'Barack Obama’, but…” The actor has also branded the US President a “fucking traitor” over his handling of the BP oil spill. He added mysteriously: “It’s more of a thought process than an actuality, but we are heading for a major conflict between the haves and the have nots. I came here many years ago with a biker movie and we stopped a war. Now, it’s about starting the world.”

Director and artist, Steve McQueen, who helmed the BAFTA winning Hunger's latest flick, produced by the team who brought us The Kings’ Speech is entitled, Shame. Starring Michael Fassbinder and Carey Mulligan, it tells of a New York self addict struggling with his inner demons.

The red carpet never stopped rocking in Cannes: Gwen Stefani (pictured above) attended the This Must Be The Place premiere in a black and white Armani Privé long gown, Claudia Schiffer appeared in a long, black, lace see-through number while Courtney Love wore a flesh tone dress that did her no favours. Best-dressed man on the carpet in Cannes was undoubtedly Ryan Gosling who stepped out for the premier of Drive in a cracking blue rat pack style tux.

Despite being in two films in competition, raising a chunk of change for his Haitian charity and living the high life, Sean Penn still a misery. “I interviewed him this morning,” revealed my source. “And he was really miserable. Monosyllabic in fact.” Nothing’s changed there then.

Lars Von Trier, presumably now located in a bunker outside Cannes, is regretting his Nazi comments. “He knows he has made the biggest mistake of his career,” said an insider. "And I don’t think he thought it would have this effect.” I think the Dane thought a few controversial comments would get his film and him in the papers. Trouble is, the film is awful and so is he. It did get him a lot of press though…

Charlotte Gainsbourg is devastated by the news that boyfriend Pete Doherty has received a six-month jail sentence. The actress shocked onlookers on the red carpet by wearing a diaphanous gown with a plunging neckline that revealed her eight-month bump. Rumour has it that Doherty is the father.

David Cronenberg directs Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbinder as Carl Yung in A Dangerous Method. The film sees the two rivals fight over Keira Knightley at the development of psychoanalysis in the early 20th century.
