Belgian BASE jump legend Cedric Dumont blogs from the World BASE Race, where the weather really is snow joke…
Hi guys
Well, we arrived last night at Innfjorden in crap weather, and today has been no better for jumping. We’ve been on standby all day, with meetings at 9am and 2pm to discuss the situation, but it looks like there won’t be any jumping today.
BASE jumpers from all over the world have come to Norway, which has had good weather in the lead-up to the World BASE Race, but it is so bad today that it’s snowing at the peak where the jumps take place, and the temperature feels like zero! Yesterday, the guys got so wet on the hike up the mountain that their hands became numb for the jump and they had trouble pulling their ’chute cords. And the jump platform is pretty slippery, too, so it would be dangerous to send them up there today.
But the setting here, right in the middle of Norway, is magical, and there are still great views. And the forecast for tomorrow is good – the weather could hardly get worse, though conditions in Norway are always unpredictable!
It’s pretty hardcore, and with the time lost, Saturday could be a tiring day for some of the guys, with today’s postponed quarter-finals, the semis and the final – that’s three hikes and jumps in one day! The final could be moved to Sunday, but the outlook for then is, again, not good, so it will probably all be in one day tomorrow.
If the conditions aren’t great for BASE jumping, they’re apparently good for surfers. We’re just 45 minutes from the coast here, and we’ve heard the swell is making for good surfing over there. Perhaps we should switch sports!
Seriously, though, I think we’ll see some good scores tomorrow when the competition gets going, and having waited around on standby all day, we’re all hoping for better weather – or at least no snow!
Speak to you all soon
Cedric
