It was a good week for Bayern Munich striker Mario Gómez, who now sets his sights on both domestic and international honours.

Gómez and his Bayern team-mates had already ended French side Lyon’s hopes in the semi-finals of the Champions League to set up their first final in the competition in nine years, where they will face Internazionale of Italy’s Serie A, themselves searching for a first European triumph since the early 1970s.

And there were few surprises when the provisional Germany squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, which begins in South Africa in a month’s time, was announced in Stuttgart last week. Gómez, Germany’s Player of the Season in 2007, is in the 30-man line-up, along with six of his Bayern Munich colleagues, and it says much of their status that the seven will in fact miss a week of Germany’s World Cup preparations as they face up to Inter for the Champions League final in Madrid, Spain, on May 22.

As if this weren’t enough, Bayern reclaimed the German Bundesliga title from holders VfL Wolfsburg at the weekend with a routine victory over already-relegated Hertha Berlin, Bayern finishing on 70 points, five points ahead of second-placed Schalke.

Gómez’s 10 goals in 29 league appearances contributed to Bayern’s hugely impressive goal difference of +41, and they will look to maintain their scoring record when they face Inter at the Bernabéu on Saturday week.
