The big band that can also be enjoyed from the sofa: Ninja Tune’s Jason Swinscoe takes us on a ride through the career of his Cinematic Orchestra in a Fireside Chat.

The Cinematic Orchestra was formed by Jason Swinscoe in 1999. At the time Jay was an employee at Ninja Tune in South London but in his spare time had begun putting together the first Cinematic Orchestra album.

Gathering a group of open-minded jazz musicians, Jay delivered the debut album, Motion, that blew heads across the world.

The orchestra includes former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter (PC) on turntables, Luke Flowers on drums, Tom Chant on saxophone, Nick Ramm on piano, Stuart McCallum on guitar and Phil France on double bass. Former members include Jamie Coleman on trumpet, drummers Daniel Howard and Federico Ughi as well as pianist Alex James. Epic tracks like Ode To The Big Sea and Night Of The Iguana emphasized the 'Cinematic' in The Cinematic Orchestra and the band haven't looked back since.

The follow-up longplayer, Every Day, displayed a more classic, orchestral tone, with guest vocals from soul jazz legend Fontella Bass and UK hip-hop don Roots Manuva taking the band’s sound to a whole new level. Touring extensively around the world, the group gained a fearsome live reputation, combining live jazz experimentation with electronics and turntablism in a fresh and exciting way.

Further albums and great success have followed, including the soundtrack to the 1929 Russian silent film, Man With A Movie Camera, and the band’s third official studio album, Ma Fleur, released in 2007.

In this Fireside Chat for Red Bull Music Academy Radio, Jay talks us through his and The Cinematic Orchestra's incredible career.
