A stroll around the key albums out this week, including alternative arrangements from Plan B and a second offering from MGMT…
MGMT return with Congratulations – their follow-up to 2008's debut Oracular Spectacular – this week. The duo have moved away from the catchy numbers such as Kids and Time To Pretend in favour of more wonkier and experimental terrains. The album was co-produced by Pete (Sonic Boom) Kember, who once used to make 'music for people to take drugs to' as one half of the magnificent Spacemen 3. The first single from Congratulations, Flash Delirium, has a suitably bonkers video to go with it – www.whoismgmt.com
Ben Drew, aka Plan B, (pictured above) originally surfaced with his debut Who Needs Actions When You Have Words in 2006, with his angry rapping about stabbing with biros and the like. Now a few years on, and after roles in the likes of Kidulthood, Adulthood and Harry Brown, he returns with a sort-of old soul concept album about a character who gets wrongly sent down and his adventures in the prison system. The Defamation Of Strickland Banks is a corker of an album, like an ASBO version of Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. www.time4planb.com
Darwin Deez is a New York-based singer-songwriter whose self-titled album comes out this week. He's heavily influenced by the teachings of 20th century Indian spiritualist Meher Baba. Literally a bit far out then. For more info visit www.darwindeez.com
Coheed & Cambria return, meanwhile, with a progressive monster of an album entitled Year Of The Black Rainbow – www.coheedandcambria.com
Scouting For Girls return with their second album Everybody Wants To Be On TV. The band have just seen their comeback single fly straight to the top of the charts and so it looks like they’ll be clocking up another million sales before very long. www.scoutingforgirls.com
