While there’s no track in Belfast, the Northern Irish capital got a real taste of F1 when David Coulthard took the Red Bull F1 Running Showcar through its streets.
More than 18,000 people lined the area around City Hall to witness the power of Red Bull City Limits and DC drive through at 170mph.
Speaking before the run which included donuts, burn-outs and straight-line runs, Coulthard said: “Other than Monaco, these cars are not designed to go on the streets. It’s a little bit bumpy, but that’s to be expected as it’ usually used for busses and traffic but there’s a nice turn out of people so we’ll give it a shot.”
The car run ended dramatically as engine heats exceeded 140 degrees and stewards were on hand with fire extinguishers. David then chatted to the fans, cheekily commenting on the Scots victory over Ireland in the rugby that day.
After the run, he said: “There’s an amazing atmosphere out here. This is the first time we’ve done a night run in a city and to come here to the city of Belfast with its great tradition of motorsports has been really enjoyable for me. The enthusiasm of the people was just unbelievable”.
The sun shone on Belfast throughout the day as Formula One fans came to see the garage and the ten-strong team of Red Bull F1 technicians which travel the world looking after the Running Showcars.
Belfast’s Lord Mayor Naomi Long said: “What a spectacle for Belfast and what an event to have in the heart of the city. I’m sure that the city’s citizens and visitors will have left with amazing memories of the Red Bull F1 car and their night out out in our city centre. A big thank you to Red Bull for bringing this event to our city and to all the organisations that pulled this to together - truly an unforgettable evening for Belfast!"
