Tomczyk and Ekstrom celebrate Tomczyk and Ekstrom celebrate © Audi Motorsport

Mattias Ekström led a one-two-three for Audi as the Swede claimed his first victory at Oschersleben and his second win of the 2011 DTM season.

Championship leader Martin Tomczyk, who had started from 14th place, finished second to extend his lead at the top after his closest rival Bruno Spengler had to retire on lap 42. Edoardo Mortara rounded out the podium with Gary Paffett fourth for Mercedes.

It was sensational recovery by the German, who’d lost his bonnet in a collision Jamie Green as he fought his way up from position 14 to extend his overall lead by nine points with two races to go. If things go his way, the Bavarian good wrap up the title win in Valencia on October 2.

"That caused me to completely lose the front aerodynamics," said Tomczyk. "But we had so much mechanical grip today that it didn’t make a big difference.

“Oschersleben was extremely slippery in the rain. When I saw one car after the other spinning off I took it a little easier. That paid off."

Up front, though, Ekström came from fourth to second at the start and only needed eight laps to overtake race leader Spengler. The two-time DTM Champion then drove one fastest lap after the other to cross the line 42 seconds clear of the pack.

"The car was simply fantastic," said a jubilant Ekström. "I can only say ‘thank you’ to my engineer and to the team."
