Reigning BMX Flatland world champion Matthias Dandois headed to Japan with his crown slipping. Only victory would do if the Frenchman, who has dominated the scene for the past two years was to retain his title. We catch up with his blog…

'The third and final leg of the BMX Flatland World Circuit took place in the International Passenger Terminal hall at Yokohama Airport in Japan this weekend.

In view of the fact that everything went a little pear-shaped in the previous round in Barcelona, Spain, the other week, I absolutely needed a win in this stage.

I finished first in qualifying but then the organisers came up with a pretty crazy format for the final: a sort of best tricks sudden death battle.

I went out in the semi – when I needed to be in the final. I am super disappointed but good: you can’t win them all. I finished fourth in the competition and third in the world championship. The event winner was Japan’s Moto Sasaki and the Spanish rider Viki Gomez is the world circuit winner.'
