Dani Pedrosa will start the 2010 Gran Premio d’Italia from pole position after an excellent late qualifying lap saw him move up to the front of the grid.
The Repsol Honda rider claimed his second pole of the season and 15th in all after posting a time of 1’48.819 on the penultimate of his 24 qualifying laps.
And that time was good enough to take top spot from overall championship leader Jorge Lorenzo by 0.177 seconds, but the session was overshadowed by a dangerous-looking fall to Valentino Rossi, who will not participate in his home MotoGP for the first time in his career after suffering a fracture of his right tibia.
The defending world champion was thrown from his bike on Turn 13 of the Mugello circuit and he looks set to be out of action for some considerable time.
Doctor Macchiagodena of the Clinica Mobile said: “It’s an injury more serious than we thought, because it’s an exposed fracture with the bone protruding from the skin. We have reduced the fracture, which fortunately has not affected any blood vessels or nerves.”
“It is serious, it could be a couple of months, but it is too early to say just yet. He remained calm, but having seen the images he could already see it was a nasty fall.”
Andrea Dovizioso will start his home MotoGP from the third row, after finishing eighth in qualifying – two places ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama, while Mika Kallio starts from 15th on the grid on his Pramac Racing Ducati.
