The Spanish MotoGP 125s race proved to be a memorable one for Marc Marquez, but for all the wrong reasons as a mechancial fault led to him crashing out and dislocating his arm on the first lap in Jerez.
The Repsol rider started from first place on the grid after an excellent performance in qualifying and despite a circumspect start, he remained in the lead group, in fourth place. However, two turns before completing the first lap, a broken exhaust pipe left the Repsol rider on the floor.
In the 'Ferrari' turn, which is a fast right hander, the silencer of his Derbi suddenly came loose and lodged in the rear wheel. It is a problem that the Italian manufacturer had recognised in the winter after switching suppliers and from which other teams had already suffered.
Márquez was thrown into the air, dislocating his right shoulder and injuring his left side around the hip area when he fell. The Repsol rider has been treated at the circuit hospital and he is due to return to Barcelona to be examined by doctors there.
With Marquez out of the running it was a Spanish 1-2-3 on the podim, as the race was won by Pol Espargaro – ironically on a Derbi – with Nicolas Terol in second and Esteve Rabat in third, which means that Marquez slips to eighth place in the overall standings behind Terol, who remains in the lead in the championship.
