60 of the best BMX dirt riders packed their bikes and travelled to Victoria, Australia, last weekend to take part in the Dirt Pipe.
The track stretches 120 metres and stands an imposing four metres tall, but, tucked away at a secret location at the base of the Victorian snow fields, this was not your average half pipe – instead it was sprinkled with wall rides, hips, and street-inspired extensions designed to push the limits of BMX.
And push the limits of the riders it did. After wet conditions in practice, the weather improved on the final day – just like the riders themselves who turned it up a few notches.
Dean Manson and Brendan Jones split the $500 ‘Judges Pick’ award following three days of signature trail riding style.
Triple X-Games Gold Medalist and five times NORA cup winner Corey Bohan shredded the pipe with his trademark effortless style too. The only surprise was the judges handing him third place and a cheque for 'only' $750.
Jed Mildon made the trek across from New Zealand to take second place and $1,500, riding like a man with something to prove, with massive double whips, and hip flairs.
But it was Jaie Toohey from New South Wales who took home the winner's prize, earning himself a trip to Chicago, USA, and a sought-after place in Red Bull Stomping Ground. Jaie’s ability to boost high while keeping it consistent proved to be the difference for the Aussie.
