Andrea Dovizioso will start the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix from the second row after qualifying fourth behind Ben Spies, who secured his first ever pole.
Italian Dovizioso clocked a time of 1’40.559 to head the second row, and briefly led the timesheets. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa will start fifth, ahead of Australian rider Casey Stoner.
Pole in America was taken by home rider Spies who dominated qualifying with a time of 1’40.105. The 26-year-old will share the front row with fellow Yamaha rider and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, while Nicky Hayden qualified third.
“We can't get ahead of ourselves," Spies said. "But, to be on pole, the first pole for me in front of the American crowd and here in Indy, with all the history...”
Interwetten Honda rider Hiroshi Aoyama – returning from serious injury – finished the day in 13th.
