Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso claimed his fourth podium of the season as he finished second behind Jorge Lorenzo in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Championship leader Lorenzo started on pole and enjoyed a comfortable race as he won by over six seconds from Dovizioso. The Italian was involved in a close battle with Ben Spies, Nicky Hayden and Randy de Puniet for the podium places.
With seven laps to go all four riders were separated by less than half a second, and it was Dovizioso who managed to keep his nose in front as Spies came through to secure his first ever podium finish. The result moves the 24-year-old up to second in the overall standings.
“We had a controlled race, but we didn't have the pace to fight with Lorenzo,” he said. “He was so fast but second is very important for the Championship.”
Dovizioso has leap-frogged team-mate Dani Pedrosa who finished eighth at Silverstone. The Spaniard was passed fit to start the race despite crashing during qualifying yesterday and although he started strongly – taking the lead on the first lap – slipped back through the field.
Pramac’s Mika Kallio endured another difficult race as he finished in 13th. While Hiroshi Aoyama was unable to start after he crashed during the warm-up.
Lorenzo now finds himself on 115 points at the top of the standings, 37 ahead of second-placed Lorenzo, while Pedrosa is a further five points back.
