Mattias Ekström chalked up a third successive pole position at the Hockenheimring ahead of title rivals Gary Paffett and Timo Scheider for the final DTM race of the season.
Ekström produced a dominant display in qualifying in his Audi, posting a time of 1m 32.525s, 0.66s quicker than Paffett.
And, despite having no chance of winning his third DTM title, the Swede is hoping to finish the season off on a high.
He said: “My Audi A4 DTM was simply perfect today. It was fantastic to drive. Tomorrow I want to finally celebrate my first victory of the season – only then will I be happy. And I’d even be happier if Timo [Scheider] clinched the title at the same time."
Reigning champion Scheider, who has picked up 56pts from the nine races to date, goes into the race seven points clear of Paffett.
And, having qualified 22/1000ths of a second faster than Paffett, Scheider will be out to maintain his advantage.
Meanwhile, Abt Sportsline Martin Tomczyk will start from seventh on the grid.
