Two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekström’s Audi A4 will start Sunday’s race at Brands Hatch from sixth place on the grid after qualifying.

Ekström, who is celebrating his 100th start in the series this weekend, is currently fourth in the drivers’ standings, 16 points behind championship leader Bruno Spengler who finished second in qualifying behind Mercedes team-mate Paul Di Resta.

The Swede won at Brands Hatch in 2006 but has it all to do if he is to repeat that feat and eat into Spengler’s championship lead.

"My last trial was basically very good," said Ekström, "but we were simply not quick enough. We didn’t manage to get the best performance out of the tyres. And if that’s the case you’re simply not on one of the front rows in the DTM.”

Audi team-mate Martin Tomczyk, meanwhile, faces an even more difficult task after finishing qualifying in 10th place.

"At Brands Hatch we experienced a difficult qualifying," he said. "There was nothing particular for me to complain about. Looking at the factors, car, team and driver, I’ve got to say that I was simply too slow.”
