As they prepare for a life at their new home, Red Bull New York are asking their fans to join an online poll and vote for their all-time best starting XI.
The move to the 25,000-seater Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, marks a turning point in the club’s history, but Managing Director Erik Stover feels that a fitting way to sign off on past success on the field is with a nod to some of the past masters from both the MetroStars and Red Bull New York eras.
The list includes France’s World Cup ’98 and Euro 2000 winner Youri Djorkaeff (pictured, above left), who played in the Red Bulls’ early days, and goalkeeper Tim Howard, who left what were then the MetroStars for Manchester United, and who now plies his trade at Premier League side Everton. Current heroes such as Juan Pablo Angel (pictured, above right) and Seth Stammler also make the shortlist.
“With the opening of Red Bull Arena, we are kicking off a new era in the history of this franchise – however, we cannot move forward without recognising the talented players who have played for this franchise in the past,” Stover says.
“I cannot imagine a better way to elect this team than by allowing the best fans in MLS to vote on the selections.”
Based on the Red Bulls’ 3-4-3 formation, you can vote on players from the following selection:
Forwards
Jozy Altidore, Juan Pablo Angel, Rodrigo Faria, Clint Mathis, Giovanni Savarese, Adolfo Valencia, John Wolyniec.
Midfielders
Mark Chung, Youri Djorkaeff , Roberto Donadoni, Eddie Gaven, Amado Guevara, Tab Ramos, Seth Stammler, Dave van den Bergh.
Defenders
Kevin Goldthwaite, Steve Jolley, Carlos Mendes, Jeff Parke, Mike Petke, Eddie Pope.
Goalkeepers
Tim Howard, Tony Meola, Jonny Walker.
Vote for your selection at www.newyorkredbulls.com/firstxi between now and March 5, 2010, and you could win a chance to be a pitchside guest of honour at the inaugural game at the Red Bull Arena when the team face Chicago Fire in their 2010 MLS season opener on March 27.
