Filipe Miguel Delgadinho Albuquerque was born in Coimbra, Portugal. He began karting at a young age when his father bought a kart for him and his brother, and soon he was competing at junior level in Portugal. By 2005, he had been recognised by the Red Bull Junior Team as an upcoming talent, and was entered into Spanish F3, Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Germany all at once! He became Rookie of the Year in all three, finishing sixth, fifth and third in the respective series. In 2006 Filipe hit the big time, winning the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault NEC crowns, earning himself a World Series by Renault drive in 2007 in Red Bull livery. A move to A1GP proved to be ill-fated as the series later collapsed, but after a season in Italian GT3 in 2009–10, Filipe stunned not only new F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel but also the (then) seven-time WRC champ Sébastien Loeb to take the ROC Champion of Champions title! A drive for Audi in DTM has followed this year, as well as driving an Audi R8 in some endurance events.
- On his rare days off, Filipe likes to go to the cinema and hang out with friends.
- When he started out in karting, his dad was his mechanic. No pressure, then!
- Though he’s a year older, Filipe shares his birthday with the Olsen twins of acting fame, Mary-Kate and Ashley…
“I think that the Carlin boys, Vettel and (Mikhail) Aleshin, my two colleagues at Red Bull, are shaping up to be two of my most serious opponents…”
Filipe correctly assesses Sebastian Vettel’s potential ahead of his 2007 season in the World Series by Renault – Aleshin eventually won the series last year.
