Wiggolly Dantas had to settle for second place in the Cold Water Classic Tasmania, Australia as Stuart Kennedy produced the week’s highest score to claim the US$20,000 prize.
The Brazilian rider could only register a combined 12.57 as 20-year-old Kennedy scored a 9.5 on his way to an overall score of 18 in the final, and the Tasmanian Tiger Trophy.
Consolation for Dantas – who had earlier knocked out Chris Davidson to reach the final – comes in the shape of a cheque for US$10,000 and second place in the overall standings as the series moves to Scotland.
Sam Lamiroy, who was commentating on the final, described the conditions in Tasmania as ‘some sort of surfing utopia’, and it was clear that Kennedy was enjoying himself.
“I guess I just got super confident towards the end,” he said.
“I was really nervous out there. But I was almost crying when I got that 9.5.”
Attention now switches to Thurso, Scotland for the second round of the series, and after the first of five events, Dantas is well placed to mount a challenge for the US$50,000 on offer for the overall series winner.
