The world’s top female surfers head to Lobitos for the Movistar Peru Classic, which is the fifth event of seven in the ASP World Tour.
The top 17 surfers in the ASP rankings will take on the long lefthanders of Northern Peru after the battle for the title increased in intensity during recent events in Sydney and Portugal.
Reigning two-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is once again ahead of the pack in 2009 and has prevailed in Peru for the last two years consecutively, but Brazil’s Silvana Lima is hot on her heels and could take over the lead in the ASP ratings with a win.
Red Bull surfers Sofia Mulanovich and Sally Fitzgibbons are currently in fourth and seventh places respectively in the rankings and Fitzgibbons will be looking for a strong performance on her Peru Classic debut.
The 18-year-old from New South Wales is battling it out with ASP third ranked Coco Ho for Rookie of the Year and Ho sees Fitzgibbons as the one to beat for that particular honour.
“I would really like to be Rookie of the Year and to stay Top 5,” Ho said. “That would be the year of my life. Sally [Fitzgibbons] and Paige [Hareb] have both been really consistent, but I would have to say Sal is my biggest competition.”
“We are both regular footers and she always pushes me. I always want to go out and surf as well as she did and she does a good job of pumping me up.”
The event begins on 3 November and concludes on 8 November.
