A group of bored train drivers has helped a promising young documentary photographer from Amsterdam snap up the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of the Red Bull 5 Pics competition, Janus van den Eijnden, who graduated from the Netherlands’ Royal Academy of Arts in 2008, has won the chance to have his pictures exhibited in one of Europe’s coolest galleries, Foam in Amsterdam, and work with leading photographers.

Red Bull 5 Pics invited photographers from all over the Netherlands to enter a series of five photos in the competition. To provide inspiration, Red Bull and the experts from Foam helped stage workshops and three photo safaris around the Dutch capital.

The top 10 entries were then decided by the general public voting on Facebook before a panel of professional photographers picked the top three.

In third place was Uninhabited House by Joost van der Meer. Second was Dynamics of Relaxation by Julie Hrudova and the winner was Janus’s New York Subway Drivers.

Janus’s prize includes his work being exhibited at Amsterdam’s impossibly cool Foam Photography Museum, plus an invitation to the Red Bull Illume tour and the chance to share tips and experience with leading photographer Rutger Pauw on a major Red Bull event.
