On the heels of former Red Bull Junior Team drivers Sebastian Vettel and Sébastien Buemi, the nine 2009 Red Bull Juniors also want to make the headlines in their respective series. Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne has already done it.
Ninety minutes’ free practice, four qualifyings, four races – and all that in only 48 hours, accompanied by major stomach cramps on Saturday: Jean-Eric Vergne’s last racing weekend was jam-packed. The 18-year-old Frenchman competed in the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona the Formula Renault Eurocup 2009, as well as in the Formula Renault West European Cup. While two retirements meant that the Eurocup didn’t quite run according to plan, Vergne almost celebrated his second double victory in the WEC on Sunday – following his two wins in Nogaro last week.
Starting from third place in the first WEC race, Jean-Eric took the lead as early as the third round and wasn’t to be beaten: third win in the third race. In the afternoon the young Frenchman then had to accept second place, three-tenths of a second behind compatriot Julien Abelli. ‘Now I’m glad and also happy that the weekend is over. I knew that my WEC series would finish at some point, though there was a victory possible in this afternoon’s race. But Abelli didn’t make any mistakes and I didn’t want to risk it all,’ the satisfied Jean-Eric Vergne commented after the race.
Good start for Jaime and Brendon
Last weekend Jaime Alguersuari (ESP) and Brendon Hartley (NZL) were also in Barcelona, where the first two races of the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series were held. With a fifth place in the first race, the 19-year-old Spaniard celebrated a successful debut in his home-turf race. On Sunday it was only a technical defect that prevented a better result. Three laps before the end Jaime had to finish his race in fourth place. For Brendon Hartley it was the opposite: having just missed out on his first points on Saturday with a 12th place, the 19-year-old New Zealander came in ninth in the second race the next day.
