This season’s FIS World Cup Super-G competition came to a thrilling conclusion in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as Erik Guay leapt from third in the standings to win the title.
Guay had won the previous race in Kvitfjell, Norway, last week, his second World Cup event win, but a solid season meant that victory on Thursday denied previous leader Michael Walchhofer, who finished down in 15th, the title, and made Guay the first Canadian to win a crystal globe in the discipline, with 331 points to Walchhofer’s 316.
“I’m completely ecstatic – I couldn't have dreamed this in my wildest dreams,” Guay told Canada’s National Post. “I knew that I had an outside shot to win the [Crystal] Globe, but I knew that I needed to win today and take some chances to win, and it feels absolutely amazing.”

Ivica Kostelic came second, with one of the other title favourites, defending Super-G champion Aksel Lund Svindal, coming third, which meant the Norwegian finished in third overall behind Walchhofer in the final standings, with 314 points. But Aksel retained his good humour, picking up an award of sorts at a season-closing party, and treating other athletes to the Norway ski team dance routine that won it… on his own.
“I did win something,” Aksel wrote in his blog on aksellundsvindal.com, no doubt with his tongue firmly in his cheek. “Last night there was a big party. The traditional Audi Night. A great atmosphere and all the racers together for one last night before we all go home.
“They had awards, and my team’s Michael Jackson tribute was highly appreciated. I was the only one from the team there, and when I went up to receive the award, they started playing Beat it and wanted me to dance. With no one else around it was tough, but I took the challenge and laid down some sick moves!”
