Yann Guichard and his crew on the Groupe Edmond de Rothschild have won the third round of the Extreme Sailing Series in Kiel, Germany as Red Bull Extreme Sailing finished the event in sixth.
Conditions in Kiel yet again produced challenging racing with big rain squalls bringing gusts, then decreasing winds and there was plenty of action on the short race courses with numerous penalties. Indeed, Red Bull Extreme Sailing’s hopes of climbing the leaderboard were effectively ended by a collision and penalty in the third race.
Roman Hagara’s men collided with The Wave, Muscat in a port/starboard incident approaching the weather mark. Neither boat was seriously damaged and both continued racing but Red Bull were handed a four-point redress as they sat out the next race to make repairs.
The event in Germany was won by Groupe Edmond de Rothschild who stormed to victory with a race to spare. Guichard’s crew winning four races on the final day having unseated Mike Golding’s Ecover from the overall lead the previous day.
“I think that's the best event we have ever done,” said Guichard. “We were in the match since the first day, our manoeuvres got better and better and the last two days were almost perfect. We enjoyed ourselves onboard and the results speak for themselves. Sometimes, like today, things just go well - we could have had 10 races today and I'm sure it would've been just as fine!”
Despite leading for the first two days, Ecover had to settle for second behind Guichard’s crew. The race for third was eventually won by The Wave, Muscat while fellow Omani team Oman Sail Masirah finished fourth.
The next stop in the series is Trapani, Sicily from September 24-26. The Italian round is the penultimate event of the series.
