Four-time Dakar rally champion Cyril Despres has added another trophy to his collection by winning the Desafio Litoral. The Frenchman took control of the six-day rally during the opening stages of the race and held on to taste victory in the Dakar Series event.

The final stage of the Desafio Litoral saw the bikers timed over 80km, the shortest stage of the entire rally. Cyril won the stage in a time of 40m13s to cement his place on top of the overall standings.

“This is a great victory for the KTM Team that have travelled to Argentina. We all worked hard for this result. Winning a race is the only result I truly enjoy. There were a few problems in the jungle during the first stages of this race and I fell off my bike. I’m glad I was able to get back up and ride out this race until the end.”

Second place on the podium went to Kuba Przygonski of the Orlen Team. Kuba suffered some trouble with his gears on the penultimate stage of the Desafio Litoral and found it impossible to make up the time he had lost to Cyril on the final day.

Despite missing out on the win the Polish biker pushed Cyril hard right until the end and was encouraged by his own performance ahead of next year’s Dakar Rally.

The third place on the podium was claimed by local rider Mauricio Gomez who put in a superb performance to keep pace with the two Dakar Rally veterans ahead of him.

The Desafio Litoral also gave Taddy Blazusiak a baptism of fire during his first taste of rally raid racing. Taddy injured his shoulder and was unable to finish the second stage of the race. The EnduroCross world champion shut out the pain and rejoined the race before managing to cross the line on the final stage.

Taddy’s attention now returns to retaining his EnduroCross title while Cyril and Kuba will be planning their trips back to South America to tackle the 2013 Dakar Rally.
