Ever wonder how dating before Facebook, Skype and mobile phones worked? Well, if you were a guy living in Bavaria, you would almost certainly have tried wooing your your desired one in the old tradition of climbing up to her window – known as 'fensterln'.
A young man would use anything he could find, but preferably a ladder, to climb his beloved's house and knock on her window. What happened then, whether the window was slammed shut or gladly opened, was another story… Nowadays things are quite different, we have match.com and fensterln is considered trespassing by law.
But on August 22, 60 young men will enliven this old tradition and compete to be the first "Red Bull Fensterlkönig" in the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The quest for the favour of the stunning Veronika Willbert, aka 'Miss Dirndl 2009' (pictured above) will be a real physical challenge: first, there is the 'Holz vor der Hütt'n' (the' wood in front of the cabin') to climb. The Red Bull Fensterlkönig will have a proper ladder provided, so no tricky climbing will be involved in getting to the balcony, but the fun begins when the potential suitor sinks a nail into a trunk ('nageln') and steals a kiss from Miss Dirndl, all against the clock.
Miss Willber's favours won't be the prize for the quickest climber and nailer, but the consolation is a private concert from the Spider Murphy Gang. Any man who feels like he's strong enough for the challenge and can avoid potential trouble at home with his wife or girlfriend can compete. Registration is open at www.redbull.de.
