KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings will start today’s MX2 race at the German Grand Prix on pole after a close tussle with home rider Ken Roczen at Talkessel, Teutschenthal.
In the MX1 class Clement Desalle grabbed his first pole of the season. Despite a broken collarbone, Max Nagl decided to race and finished sixth, while Tony Cairoli suffered a crash and could only manage 13th.
Roczen won the German GP last year but was unable to pip Herlings to pole despite pushing him close for much of the race. The Dutchman did enough to hold him off and earn his second pole of the season.
Despite qualifying behind Herlings, the German is still confident he can grab victory today.
“I had a good start and I was in third place,” the 15-year-old said. “It was a good race and I tried to pass Jeffrey a couple of times but it just didn't happen. I still had a lot in reserve though and the race will be longer tomorrow. I did not show everything that I have.
“The track is OK, it needs some watering and is not easy for passing but I feel confident. We were also helped with the changes on the bike; we are certainly competitive and stronger at the starts.”
MX2 championship leader, Marvin Musquin, rode a calm qualifying race to finish seventh.
