The Dirty Skirts are winners of the Red Bull Soundclash 2009 in Johannesburg, beating Tumi and the Volume in a closely-contested battle of the bands.

The energy of the first Red Bull Soundclash in South Africa at the Carlton Centre Sky Rink was at its peak when the bands Tumi and the Volume and The Dirty Skirts entered the two stages set up on either side.

After each band performed the four rounds, the crowd decided who the winner was based on their applause. The 'applause-meter' measured the noise levels by microphone.

The warm-up got everyone in the mood for the first round. The 'cover' challenges the bands to come forwards with their version of a well-known song: the Spice Girls’ 'Wannabe' was up for the treatment, and and Tumi’s version definitely won the crowd’s favour.

From thereon in, The Dirty Skirts took no prisoners, clearly registering higher decibel levels in the 'Takeover', where each band has to create their rendition of the other band's songs. In the Soundclash itself, each band has to play their songs in a given genre suggested by the DJ, and the enthusiastic crowd pushed the meter higher on the Dirty Skirts' side.

The final 'wild card' round, each band has to play a song with a special guest. The Dirty Skirts brought Thandiswa Mazwai, queen of modern South African pop, on stage, while at the other end of the rink, Zolani Mahola joined the stage with Tumi and the Volume.

In the end, it was Cape Town’s The Dirty Skirts and their beloved fans that pushed the sonic energy just a few decibels higher to take the round and ultimately win the clash.

The competitive energy on stage was more of a friendly rivalry. As the giant Red Bull Soundclash trophy was handed over to The Skirts, lead singer Jeremy called on Tumi and his band to join them on stage for a final performance to end the night. The fans suddenly found themselves cheering for both bands, and there was no longer any competition. Both bands had shown true form to create this one-of-a-kind musical madness.
