Despite being from Sweden, The Hives think that Air & Style should abandon snow and head for the tropics, though that would mean saying goodbye to the complimentary hot punch… We spoke exclusively to the band after their Billabong Air & Style gig in Innsbruck.
They say you guys are pretty handy snowboarders. Are The Hives a sporty band?
Nicholaus Arson: Definitely.
Chris Dangerous: I’ve done boxing for a while.
Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist: If we play beside a mountain, we like to climb it. We’re also good swimmers and skiers.
CD: We are multi-talented.
You’ve been here at Air & Style in Innsbruck twice now – you must enjoy it.
HPA: When we were here for the first time, someone brought us to the stage with a snowmobile. And they offered us a superb hot wine punch.
NA: The main reason why we like to come here is hot wine punch.
It is pretty cold outside…
NA: Yes, as a guitar player my job is really fucking hard sometimes.
HPA: It would be better to arrange the Air & Style somewhere in tropical regions. Snowboarders are flexible guys. Melting snow can’t be a handicap for them.
Are there any other bands you’d like to challenge on stage?
CD: AC/DC.
HPA: Yeah, they would be worthy opponents!

How would you rate your chances of winning?
NA: I would say 50:50.
HPA: Ten years ago, our chances of winning would have been smaller, let’s say 65:35 for them.
You recently celebrated [Eagles of Death Metal’s] Jesse Hughes’s birthday with him, didn’t you?
HPA: It wasn’t at Jesse’s house – we were on tour together. This man loves guns and doesn’t talk about anything else. He really loves being in the desert, shooting watermelons. Hopefully he’ll take us with him someday, if we have any time left.
You suggest that you’ll ‘probably’ release a new album next year. What can we expect?
CD: It’s gonna be greeeaaat! And it will be in stores in 2010 – probably.
HPA: Is 2010 the name of the new album? Are there any rumours? No, just joking. We still don’t know that much about it. We only know that it will be great. So we have to make it great now!
How do you celebrate Christmas?
HPA: With the people we love.
NA: Fortunately we have hot wine punch in Sweden, too, so it will be similar to Innsbruck.
What are your wishes for the New Year?
HPA: Peace at any cost.
NA: I agree.
CD: And a new album…
