Iouri Podladtchikov made history at the Winter X Games Europe as the snowboard star claimed gold in the SuperPipe.

I-Pod became only the second rider ever, after Shaun White, to land a Double McTwist 1260, scoring a monstrous 98.0 – the highest score in Winter X Games history.

The 21-year-old Russian-Swiss revealed afterwards that he had had the manoeuvre in mind prior to his participation in the Olympics.

He said: "Two weeks before the Olympics, I did it in my head. Then I started [trying it] a week ago. The Olympics were a big downer for me, and I came home and didn't ride. I came back from a relaxing trip, went to a session and landed it second try."

'I’ve never stopped believing that it’s possible to beat Shaun...'

The first Winter X Games held outside the United States were a huge success, with the Tignes resort in France hosting a stellar competition – and it wasn’t just I-Pod who shone.

Home crowd favourite Mathieu Crepel did not disappoint his fans in the SuperPipe, finishing runner-up only to the brilliance of Podladtchikov, while Louie Vito picked up bronze.

The final word of course belonged to Podladtchikov...

"I have another double that I've never shown in competition and of course I'm going to add that to my run," he teased. "I want to make it interesting, and I've never stopped believing that it's possible to beat Shaun..."

Podladtchikov and White are both scheduled to appear at the US Open which takes place March 18-20. Watch this space...
